The Adaptable Abode
With the rising housing crisis, it is important to recognize a dignified approach to architecture that can serve as emergency housing. The Adaptable Abode attempts to form a community through its prefabricated and folded design along 3685 S Vermont Ave. The design consists of a single and family unit, both using two main prefabricated dwelling units. One dwelling unit features a Murphy bed and closet storage with a removable table to save space, while the other includes a kitchenette with storage and a bathroom. These two dwelling units connected form a single unit, whereas four form a family unit. The units are made with sustainable materials and are able to be disassembled for easy transportation and assembly on-site. The Adaptable Abode is meant to feel and be personalized as a home rather than simply a temporary house.
The Community Creative Co-Op: Grown & Terraced
The Community Creative Co-Op views the South Los Angeles area as an art desert, hoping to provide sustainable housing and job opportunities via different forms of art: Visual Arts, Recreational Arts, Culinary Arts, and Performing Arts. Located in between S Vermont Avenue and West 37th Drive, Site C focuses on addressing the lack of food opportunities via culinary arts and gardening. Using a terraced approach, the south facing communal gardening areas take advantage of the sunlight. The units that are meant to house 1-5 people have strategically placed apertures to receive an equal amount of sunlight and ventilation. The programs in the co-op include a soup kitchen, full service restaurant, and farmers' market for residents to work in exchange for rent. The shared overhang with other sites allow for local artists to express a cultural mural, resulting in a rubbernecking effect along South Vermont Avenue. Thus, creating a slower and safer traffic area for a busy road alongside a school. Overall, the Grown and Terraced Living Co-Op hopes to shed light on food insecurity and flourish the local community.
