GUMDROP GARDEN

What makes a community center fun and playful? When looking at the previous programs of the Broadway Trade Center, most of its appeal to the public came from its family friendly rooftop play areas, candy kitchen, and library available to all. In order to make the center approachable again, the design focuses on making the programs appealing through color and shape. Acknowledging this, the Gumdrop Garden takes the surrounding boxed rectangular shapes and rounds off the forms to reveal domes! Families will be able to enjoy a day out for fun and relaxation surrounded by colorfully lit forms in contrast to the monochromatic views of Downtown. These structures consist of steel geodesic domes that are covered in pillow ETFE sheeting of varying hues based on the different programs available. Overall, the Gumdrop Garden aims to bring whimsical color and fun geometries to the Downtown Los Angeles area for all ages to delight in.
